How much to tip a tow truck driver

No tip required; $5 to $20 optional

You don't have to tip a roadside driver. AAA explicitly says its members don't need to. If you want to thank someone for difficult work, $5 to $20 is an optional cash gesture, not a required rate.

There is no percentage here. It is cash for the difficulty, and more in bad weather or on a dangerous shoulder.

The call

Add a few details to see what to tip.

Standard tow

$10

$10 cash, more if they got you out of a ditch, worked in the rain, or kept you safe on a live shoulder. There is no percentage here, just what the difficulty was worth.

What to tip

Usually

$5 for a jump, lockout, or tire; $10 for a standard tow; $20 for a difficult recovery.

Generous

More for a 2am call, a live-traffic shoulder, deep mud or snow, or a driver who calmed a stressful situation.

No extra tip

$0 is normal for AAA roadside assistance and always okay when you don't want to add a tip.

When to adjust it

AAA or insurance covered it

AAA says tipping its roadside drivers is not necessary. You can still offer an optional thank-you for exceptional help if the driver may accept it; check another provider's policy if applicable.

Difficulty, not distance

A long flatbed haul on a clear day can be easier than a short winch-out of a ditch. Tip the effort and the risk, not the mileage.

Bad weather or danger

Changing a tire on a live highway shoulder or working in a storm is genuinely risky. Lean to the top of the range or beyond.

No cash on hand

Many people are stranded without cash. Ask if they can take a card or a payment app; if not, a sincere thank-you is honest, and you can tip next time.

Location matters

United States (default)

Roadside tipping is optional in the US. These figures are examples of a voluntary thank-you, not a service rate or an amount AAA expects.

High-cost cities

The numbers hold. It is the difficulty and the conditions that move the tip, not the city.

Outside the US

Roadside tipping is largely a US habit. Follow local practice elsewhere.
