How much to tip a pet sitter

About 15% of the sit

A pet sitter sets their own rate, so a tip is optional. If you want to leave one for good care, about 10 to 20% of the booking is a useful range. A flat thank-you can work better for a long stay.

Tip in the sitting app or cash at pickup, once, not on every photo update.

15% of the sit

$11

$11 cash or in the sitting app at the end of the booking.

0 means a flat per visit / night instead of a percent

What to tip

Usually

10 to 20% of the booking, or $5 per drop-in / $10 to $20 per overnight.

Generous

20 to 25% for medication schedules, a sick pet, or a holiday week they protected.

No extra tip

$0 is fine when you paid the agreed rate, already tipped in the app, or the sitter cannot accept tips.

Overnight pet-sitting tip examples

Use the total booking price for an overnight or house sit. Each example shows one tip for the whole stay.

Weekend and longer overnight bookings

Booking prices below are examples, not estimates of what a sitter charges. Select a tip to change the nights, pets, or actual booking total.

Weekend and longer overnight bookings. Suggested extras use the calculator’s cash rounding. Select an amount to try that example.
Booking exampleSuggested extra
$200 weekend overnight stayNights: 2 · Pets: 1 · Already tipped: No$30
$300 long weekend with two petsNights: 3 · Pets: 2 · Already tipped: No$45
$700 week-long overnight stayNights: 7 · Pets: 1 · Already tipped: No$105

The booking-total method already reflects the price charged for extra pets. It is one tip for the booking, with cash rounding, rather than an additional tip each night. If you already tipped in the app, the calculator shows no extra tip.

When to adjust it

Drop-in vs overnight

Drop-ins are smaller flats. Overnight and house sits track closer to a percent of the booking.

Rover, Wag, and similar apps

If you already tipped in the app, do not add cash unless they went far beyond the booking.

Friend or family rate

If a friend charges you less than usual, you can still add a thank-you. A flat amount may make more sense than a percentage of the discounted rate.

Location matters

United States (default)

Tipping pet sitters is a personal choice in the US. Many independent sitters do not expect it. These ranges are optional thank-yous, not an extra amount you owe.

High-cost cities

15 to 20% of the booking is typical when overnight rates are already high.

Outside the US

Local custom varies. Follow the platform and country practice.

Common questions

How much do you tip a pet sitter?

About 15% of the sit is a solid default, or roughly $5 per drop-in / $15 per overnight as a flat.

Do you tip for every drop-in?

Tip once for the booking, sized to the number of visits, not a separate Venmo after every photo.

How much do you tip an overnight pet sitter or dog sitter?

About 15% of the booking is a good starting point. If you prefer a flat amount, plan on roughly $15 per overnight, then adjust for extra pets or special care.

Do extra pets change the tip?

Yes on a flat: add a little per extra animal. On a percent, the booking total already reflects them.

Should you tip if the app already asked?

If you already tipped in the app, $0 extra is honest.
