How much to tip a barber or hairdresser
For a haircut, color, or other hair service in the US, start with 15 to 20% of the price. The same range works whether you see a barber or a stylist.
Tip the person who did your hair. If someone shampooed, colored, or assisted, you can add a few dollars for them.

20% of a $30 service
$6
$6 total for the barber or stylist. Tip the person who did the work, owner or employee.
What to tip
15 to 20% of the service price. For a low-cost haircut, a $3 to $5 tip is a practical minimum.
Around 25% for a detailed fade, a long color session, a difficult correction, or someone who fit you in.
$0 extra when gratuity is already included or the shop says it cannot accept tips.

Haircuts, color, and longer appointments
Use the full price of the hair service. These examples start with one stylist and no separate assistant tip or included gratuity.
| Hair service price | 15% | 18% | 20% | 25% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $20 haircut | $3 | $4 | $4 | $5 |
| $25 haircut | $4 | $5 | $5 | $6 |
| $30 haircut | $5 | $5 | $6 | $8 |
| $40 haircut | $6 | $7 | $8 | $10 |
| $50 haircut | $8 | $9 | $10 | $13 |
| $75 haircut | $11 | $14 | $15 | $19 |
| $100 salon service | $15 | $18 | $20 | $25 |
| $150 salon service | $25 | $25 | $30 | $40 |
| $200 salon service | $30 | $35 | $40 | $50 |
Amounts use the same cash rounding and minimum tip as the calculator. Select a cell for its exact inputs. For a shampoo assistant or color assistant, turn on the assistant option after loading an example; check whether the salon pools tips first. An included gratuity changes the extra tip to zero.
When to adjust it
Your barber or stylist owns the shop
The old rule against tipping the owner is out of date. If they did the work, use the same 15 to 20% range.
A low-cost haircut
A strict percentage of a $15 to $20 cut can be just a few dollars. Round up to about $3 to $5 if you can.
Color, beard work, or other extras
Calculate the tip on the full service price, including add-ons. A long or complicated service may justify the generous end of the range.
An assistant helped
If someone shampooed, applied color, or helped with the service, add a few dollars for them when the salon does not pool tips. Ask the desk if you are unsure.
You were unhappy with the result
Tell the barber or stylist while you are there so they can try to fix it. If the service went badly and they did not make it right, a smaller tip can be reasonable.
Location matters
United States (default)
Tipping a barber or hairdresser is customary in the US. These ranges summarize etiquette guidance, not a wage survey.
High-cost services
When the service already costs more, 20% can be a substantial dollar amount. You do not need to add another flat tip unless someone else assisted.
Outside the US
Hair service tipping varies by country. Follow local practice; the calculator starts with US custom.
